New Project Win for Alta Environmental – Hazardous Material Assessment, Abatement Design, and Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessment for Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail Replacement Project.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Works
Alta Environmental is pleased to announce a significant recent win in contracted project work with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works to perform hazardous materials surveys, abatement design, and environmental site assessments for the Men’s Central Jail (MCJ) in Downtown Los Angeles.
The facility, operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has been slated for demolition and replacement with a proposed Consolidated Correctional Treatment facility (CCTF) intended to treat mentally ill inmates. The project, which has an estimated overall cost estimate of nearly $2 billion has stimulated robust community discussion.
In a previous statement, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said, “My primary goal is to reduce recidivism, and effective jail master planning is one component of that process. …What is certain is that [Men’s Central Jail] has to be replaced and a mental health facility must be built”. Earlier this month after considerable debate, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to proceed with the initial steps of the project
As part of this major undertaking, Alta’s work will include completing detailed assessments for the presence of potential in-situ hazardous building materials. Additionally, Alta will complete Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in order to identify potential environmental conditions which could later impact the project. Following the initial assessment phase, Alta will design hazardous material abatement plans outlining safe and effective removal and remediation procedures protecting not only the workers, but helping to protect the surrounding community as well.
