Does Your Facility Need to Comply with SB 14?

7/21/2015

The deadline for compliance with SB 14 is rapidly approaching. Do you need to file a report?

Question 1 – What is SB 14?

Answer – SB 14, the Hazardous Waste Source Reduction and Management Review Act of 1989, requires that large quantity hazardous waste generators (LQGs) evaluate source reduction opportunities, develop a Plan to reduce hazardous waste, and report on accomplishments every four years.

Question 2 – Does my facility have to comply with SB 14?

Answer – If during the 2014 calendar year your facility generated more than 26,400 lbs of hazardous waste, more than 26.4 lbs of extremely hazardous waste, or more than 3,100 gallons of hazardous waste water; then you are probably captured by SB 14.

Question 3 – When are the SB 14 documents due?

Answer – The next set of SB 14 documents including the Source Reduction Plan, the Hazardous Waste Management Performance Report and the Summary Progress Report (SPR) must be completed by September 1, 2015.  The Summary Progress Report (SPR) must be retained on site with the other documents.

Question 4 – How long does it take to complete these documents?

Answer – Unless you have an extremely large and complex facility (for example a refinery), the Plan, Report, and SPR will take 40-60 man-hours to complete.

Question 5 – If I am a small business will I have to complete these documents?

Answer – Yes, but in lieu of the Source Reduction Plan and the Hazardous Waste Management Performance Report you may file an alternate document.

Question 6 – Is it possible that I don’t have to complete the Plan and Reports?

Answer – Yes, we can help determine if you are exempt from reporting under the requirements of SB 14.
