ISO 45001 Certification

3/25/2019

ISO
Getting certified for health and safety management systems.

Since its inception in 2018, many companies are looking to get ISO 45001 certified to add the health and safety management systems to their other certifications, such as the quality standard (ISO 9001) and the environmental standard (ISO 14001). The most common questions that arise when seeking this new certification include:

  • How will this management system help my company stay OSHA compliant?
  • What are the benefits of implementing this certification?

OSHA Compliance

During the implementation of this health and safety management system, your company will need processes to:
  • Identify and assess hazards
  • Controls the risks associated with these hazards
  • Establish controls to reduce or eliminate the risks
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of controls
  • Identify the legal requirements
  • Improve their occupational health and safety performance

The outcomes of implementing these processes are (1) providing a safe work environment and (2) having a standard risk assessment to develop proper documentation, training and competencies. In addition, your company will improve health and safety performance.

Benefits of Implementation

Most organizations inquiring about ISO 45001 implementation ask us how it will help meet their legal requirements and reduce cost for their facility, as this helps convince upper management to give the go ahead on certification. Meeting your OSHA requirements and avoiding penalty fees are benefits of the management system, but not the only ones. You will experience fewer incidents; reduced workers compensation costs and a happier, healthier, and more efficient work force.

Your insurance carrier may have a program to reduce your premiums if you implement this management system. Ask you agent if they have such a program.

Companies who achieve this certification also experience improved communication between upper management and line workers. Training on the hazards, risks, and controls in place, as well as communication of the facility’s performance, will enhance relations between the organization and its workers.
