In November 2016, The Los Angeles Times published an article with the headline “Air regulators find a cancer-causing metal [Chromium 6, or Hexavalent Chromium] at 350 times normal levels in Paramount”. The Air District put fourth Rule 1430 which regulates all outdoor metal grinding, cutting, or small part grinding operations in the South Coast Air Basin. This rule contains new requirements which are intended to cut emissions of Chromium 6. Such requirements include conducting all metal grinding operations in permanent total enclosures and placement of visible signs with the Air District’s pollution emergency phone number so notification at Rule 1430 applicable facilities with the Air District’s pollution emergency phone number so the public can report any suspicious odors and/or smoke.
